While responding to another post regarding reward systems, I thought about a paper I wrote for my Educational Psychology and Human Development course in 2007. My experiences in classrooms since that time have greatly reinforced the beliefs I expressed in that paper. What do you think?

Very interesting and well-written! I appreciate the synthesis of the research and also can see from experience that extrinsic rewards do more harm than good. Now I'm scrambling to think of a way to explain to my kiddos why we're not doing AR rewards any longer! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the compliment on my paper. I put a lot of thought and work into it. Maybe you could just tell your students that rewards become the goal, and reading becomes the way to get them. Reading should be more than pages and points. Perhaps they would even understand that you are trying to let them discover how good self-satisfaction feels.
